Work life balance - An employer should never make you choose between the two

It has been awhile since my last post and it feels good to be back. Super excited 😊 and thankful for opportunities and meeting new people and having humans from all over still taking the time to view my website. After all these years of Nursing full time as an LPN I was so grateful when a short time ago I had an opportunity and lucky enough to go from full time to permanent part time days. What a blessing and stress reliever. Finally now having an amazing opportunity to actually practice work life balance. Over the years of working full time those 12hour shifts ( sometimes longer) have become more difficult and stressful, my body and mind were definitely feeling the effects of how demanding healthcare is on one’s body and lifestyle. I don’t regret being a nurse, in fact I absolutely love it and after all these years of working short and long hours and hard hours my there’s g2b a better way was to go part time. Balancing home and work life. Not all of us have this opportunity to go from full time to part time but I was in a position where the opportunity presented itself so why not. I saw it as a win, win situation. Being able to do what I love and have more time to focus on family , friends and this blog of mine. I can’t believe its finally happening. The positive vibes finally came my way. Imagine though if all of that was about to change. Take a moment and think about how organizations can change their employees life simply by potentially implementing a schedule that allows for their gain but could potentially change the lives and feelings of their hard working employees. I can’t imagine how one might feel when most of their career they have worked part time and in an effort for the company to save money many of the employees would potentially be forced to work full time hours and longer shifts. Can one even imagine the devastating effects that this may pose on the employees that have made a difference in a positive manner to the employer ? It’s hard to imagine especially in a world where we are constantly trying to achieve a healthy workplace and a healthier life. It’s about finding balance and what works best for the individual. Many work full time for their own personal needs and goals and many choose part time and or casual work also based on personal needs and goals. People make these decisions and choices based on individual needs. So when an organization without respectful warning decides to make a potential change for themselves I wonder if they understand the impact that it places upon their wonderful community of employees. Gosh please say it isn’t true that good , hard working individuals are just a number and replaceable. Can any company just see years of service and dedication not being rewarded? It’s like saying , “ hey thanks for working part time with us for 20 plus years but now we are changing and despite the fact that you have been an amazing employee we are giving you the choice of full time or no time. “. I can’t even imagine the stress that this would cause to employees. How they would feel? How would you feel if it was you being put in that position. Would you feel like a number? Would you feel replaceable? Would you feel important? Would you feel valued? Too many times you hear people saying how undervalued and overworked they are. Whether this be someone in healthcare or any other profession. Lately humans feel exactly like that. I recently heard that almost 70% of humans feel unhappy in their work life. That is unfortunate and that number should be a red flag 🚩 to current employers everywhere. Why is morale down? Why are people leaving? Why is sick time so high? I challenge employers to think about these issues and then take a moment to reflect on why these things are. What makes your employees happy ? I have worked in healthcare long enough to know that pizza and free snacks don’t fix anything. Staff in any industry whether healthcare or a local coffee shop need to feel comfortable, heard, appreciated and respected and valued. They need to know that they are important and not just a number. And they most definitely need to know that they are NOT replaceable. Employees need to know that an organization understands and values balance. If you are working part time you choose that option for a reason and an employer needs to recognize that. They may physically be able to replace a human with a human but an employer can not replace the skill , knowledge , experience not to mention compassion and dedication that that one has given over the years. Full time employees and part time employees as well as casual employees are what makes any organization shine. People working in positions that were offered to them doesn’t seem right that it can be taken away. Doesn’t seem right that employees who have provided an organization with such dedication should ever be in a position where they are required to work more than what they have known or more than they want. For those of you that follow my blog you know i always say there’s G2B a better way and for me personally a while ago that better came to me Like I said I had excepted a permanent part time job all 8hr days. So happy as it was better for me health wise and lifestyle wise as well. Just overall better for my own wellbeing. I also recently signed a retention bonus based upon my job offer as well. So finally I got my work life balance together. Which means I have more flexibility and more flexibility means more time for my family and blogging. I hope that I am never facing a challenge with work and life. I hope that I am never in a position where I am forced back into full time work until I am able and ready or ever want to. The sad thing is that perhaps I am just a number. Maybe I am replaceable. If a company offers you and many others part time positions and you got the job , why would they take that joy from you. It must be a bad dream to think that this could happen to anyone. Or maybe it’s not a dream at all ….

Thanks for reading.
